Restoration and Repair

In over thirty years of building traditional canoes and twenty-five teaching classes there are nearly five-hundred canoes out there I’ve had a hand in building. Naturally a few find their way back to the shop each year for refinishing, recanvassing, repair, and - with the occasional accident – restoration. In addition to these "family" canoes we welcome fine old canoes of any brand and any condition in need of help.

We are fortunate to have two fine craftsmen working independently out of our large facility who devote themselves primarily to repairing and restoring wood and canvas craft and even building new boats that fall outside our specialty.

Bob Volock
Bob Volock or "Cousin Bob" started helping out at Island Falls Canoe after school for the fun of it. Since retiring from thirty years of teaching he has worked out of our shop professionally mostly restoring canoes under his business name – Cedarwood Canoe Co.

Jonathan Minott
Jonathan Minott, a graduate of College of the Atlantic and the Eastport Boat School, honed his fine boatbuilding talents at yards up and down the coast of Maine and even Martha’s Vineyard – including Ralph Stanley’s boatyard in Southwest Harbor.

He has built many classic dinghies for us. Under his own business, J.C. Minott Boat Co., working out of our shop Jonathan has restored dozens of challenging wood and canvas and other traditional boats and built gorgeous one of a kind craft including lapstrake dinghies, Whitehall’s, and kayaks.

Here is some of the exceptional work Jonathan has accomplished over the past few years:

Dear Jerry and Andi,
The canoe looks beautiful and brand new. Amazing considering we purchased that canoe from you in July 1993. The shellac job is so rich in appearance. How did you achieve that effect, what kind of shellac did you use and how many coats were applied? I would like to maintain it in that style, if possible.
